Handelsblatt receives “European Newspaper Award”

NewspaperAward 01

Handelsblatt is chosen as the “Best Newspaper in Europe”:

the jury at the 19th European Newspaper Awards selected the Düsseldorf-based business and financial newspaper as “European Newspaper of the Year” in the category: best national daily newspaper.

Other winners this year come from Luxembourg (“Tageblatt”, category: local newspaper), the Netherlands (“De Limburger”, category: regional newspaper) and Norway (“Morgenbladet”, category: weekly newspaper). A total of 185 newspapers from 27 countries participated in the European Newspaper Awards.

This was how the jury explained its decision: “The handy tabloid format makes Handelsblatt a pleasant contrast to other newspapers. The recently introduced daily double page of information graphics and the weekend cover stories are difficult to beat anywhere in Europe for their detail and magazine-like layout. The transformation process towards electronic media is far advanced, with a third of the circulation already in the form of e-papers. That shows that the readers are very open-minded towards innovation. A highlight of the newspaper’s online activities is the morning newsletter from the publisher, which is often quoted in other media.”

Handelsblatt editor-in-chief Sven Afhüppe’s reaction to the award: “We are very happy to receive the “European Newspaper Award”, which reflects not just the ongoing visual enhancement of the product, but also the high relevance of Handelsblatt’s content beyond Germany’s borders. The prize is an honour, but also an incentive: we will continue to pursue new, innovative paths and sharpen the editorial profile of the newspaper.”

The “European Newspaper Award” was introduced in 1999. Its aim is to improve newspaper design and conception within Europe and contribute to new, creative solutions. The European Newspaper Awards ceremony will take place in May 2018 at the European Newspaper Congress in Vienna.
